Fruit and Vegetables

Aubergine ‘Kamo’

A small, Japanese aubergine.

Sowed 43 seeds on 22/02/2021 in potting soil for seedlings, without soaking seeds. 100% germination rate achieved on day 9. The plants fared well, but the fruits attracted a lot of slugs. Those that were harvested were very tasty. Recommended, but must take appropriate pest control action.

Cucumber ‘Green apple’

A small, round cucumber variety from Australia.

Sown in late April without soaking seeds. Excellent germination (>90%). Plants are not demanding and grow easily. Produces well, but a bit hard to use due to their shape and large proportion of seeds. However, taste is excellent and importantly, they do not become bitter when yellow (zero bitter cucumbers over two years). Seed saving was successful.

Cucumber ‘Morden early’

A compact cucumber supposed to do well in Northern climates.

Sown in late April without soaking seeds. Excellent germination (>90%). Plants are not demanding and grow easily without overgrowing its neighbours. Cucumbers grow rapidly; perhaps a bit too rapidly. However, very little bitterness even when yellow (less than 5% of yellow cucumbers was bitter over two years). Seed saving was successful.

Edamame ‘Early hakucho’

A Japanese variety of soy bean supposed to do well in Northern climates.

Sown in late April without soaking seeds. 66% germination rate. Neglected to harvest beans in time, but production was good.
